Woodmansterne Primary

Art and D.T

Our art and D.T curriculum develops creativity, sets challenges and aims to engage and inspire our children. Our aim is to equip Woodmansterne pupils with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design, both in school and beyond.  We recognise the vital role of art and D.T in fostering curiosity, creativity and self-expression whilst developing important life skills such as; resilience and the ability to problem solve and evaluate, to cope with and learn from mistakes and to develop pupil self-confidence and an ability to work collaboratively within group projects.

We believe that through expanding our pupil’s knowledge and understanding of famous artists and artistic techniques, we can help each child to develop their own artistic style, encouraging independence and individuality.

Those less confident in academic subjects or with special educational needs can express themselves fully in these practical subjects, ensuring that all pupils become resilient, confident artists, designers and engineers that move into secondary school with a wealth of creative knowledge and experience.

Implementation

Within each year group there is a clear progression of skills, as set out in the National Curriculum, which builds on prior learning and further extends this knowledge at an appropriate level. We teach art and DT through our carefully constructed Learning Experience projects which are a sequence of lessons which develop both knowledge and skills and work towards a creative project with a clearly defined end product.
