Phonics and Spellings
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 (Key Stage 1)
At Woodmansterne Primary School, we use a synthetic phonics programme called ‘Read Write Inc.’ to support the Key Stage 1 children’s reading, writing and spelling skills. Read Write Inc. is a method of learning centred around letter sounds and phonics, blending the sounds together to read and write words.
Read Write Inc. starts with a simple code so children can achieve early success in their reading and writing. The programme is designed to stimulate and challenge children’s thinking and create enthusiastic, life-long readers and writers. Children work with a teacher, or a teaching assistant, in small groups for four Read Write Inc. sessions each week. During each lesson, the teacher will focus on some key sounds, using them to explore spelling patterns and develop the children’s spelling skills.
